9 Days in Tbilisi and Yerevan: The Perfect Caucasus Itinerary

Day 1 – Discover Tbilisi + Jvari Monastery & Chronicles of Georgia
Your journey begins in Tbilisi, one of the most atmospheric capitals in Eastern Europe. The city blends medieval churches, Soviet architecture, colorful balconies, and modern design, making it a fascinating place to explore on foot.
Start your morning in the Old Town (Altstadt). Walk through narrow cobblestone streets, admire the famous wooden balconies, and visit landmarks such as the Sioni Cathedral and Anchiskhati Basilica, the oldest church in the city. Continue toward the futuristic Bridge of Peace, one of Tbilisi’s most recognizable landmarks.
Take the cable car to Narikala Fortress for panoramic views of the city and the Mother of Georgia statue, a symbol of the capital welcoming friends and defending against enemies.
If you enjoy museums, consider visiting the Georgian National Museum to understand the country’s rich history, or explore the Dry Bridge Market, a lively flea market where locals sell antiques, Soviet memorabilia, and handmade crafts.
Short Trips Outside the City
In the afternoon, take a short Uber or Bolt ride (rides are very affordable in Tbilisi) to two impressive landmarks just outside the city.
First, visit the Chronicles of Georgia, a massive monument often called the “Georgian Stonehenge”. Huge carved pillars depict kings, queens, and biblical scenes while offering incredible views over the Tbilisi Sea.
Then continue to Jvari Monastery, a UNESCO-listed 6th-century church located above the historic town of Mtskheta. From here you’ll see the spectacular meeting point of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers.
Return to Tbilisi for dinner and enjoy your first night in the Caucasus.
Day 2 – Epic Mountains of Kazbegi (Organised Day Trip)
Today I strongly recommend joining an organized 10-hour excursion along the Georgian Military Highway, one of the most scenic mountain roads in the Caucasus.
The journey begins with a stop at the Zhinvali Reservoir, a stunning turquoise lake surrounded by forested hills.
Next, explore the Ananuri Fortress Complex, a beautiful medieval castle overlooking the water. Climb the towers and admire the views across the valley.
As you continue north toward the Greater Caucasus Mountains, you’ll reach the colorful Georgia–Russia Friendship Monument, built during the Soviet era. The circular balcony offers incredible panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
One of the highlights of the day is the legendary Gergeti Trinity Church. Sitting at 2,170 meters above sea level, this iconic church stands alone against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Kazbek.
Many tours also include a stop in Juta, a remote alpine village surrounded by some of the most beautiful landscapes in Georgia.
Evening Idea: Tbilisi Movie Nights

Day 3 – Kakheti Wine Region Tour (Organised Day Trip)
Georgia is widely considered the birthplace of wine, with an 8,000-year-old winemaking tradition. Today you’ll explore Kakheti, the country’s most famous wine region.
Join an organized tour from Tbilisi that combines wine, culture, and stunning scenery.
Your first stop is the small village of Badiauri, where you can taste traditional Georgian bread and cheese baked in a clay oven at a local bakery.
Next, visit the peaceful Bodbe Monastery, one of the most spiritual places in the country. The monastery is associated with Saint Nino, who introduced Christianity to Georgia in the 4th century.
Continue to Sighnaghi, often called the “City of Love”. This charming hilltop town features colorful houses, cobblestone streets, and spectacular views across the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus Mountains.
A special highlight of your day will be visiting a local family winery, where you’ll taste traditional Georgian wines made in qvevri, large clay vessels buried underground.
Day 4 – Didgori Memorial, Dashbashi Canyon & Diamond Bridge
For today’s adventure, consider renting a car to explore some impressive landscapes southwest of Tbilisi.
Start with the Didgori Battle Memorial, dedicated to the famous Battle of Didgori (1121) where King David IV defeated a much larger invading army. The monument features enormous swords rising from the ground and is one of Georgia’s most symbolic historical sites.
From there, drive to Dashbashi Canyon, one of the country’s most spectacular natural areas. A scenic hiking trail leads down into the canyon where you’ll find a beautiful waterfall surrounded by lush greenery.
The highlight here is the Diamond Bridge, a modern glass sky bridge suspended high above the canyon. Walking across the bridge offers incredible views and a thrilling experience.
Try to stay until after sunset, when the bridge lights up and the canyon becomes even more magical.
Day 5 – Final Tbilisi Morning & Transfer to Yerevan
Spend your final day in Tbilisi enjoying the city at a slower pace.
Start your morning in Abanotubani, the historic sulfur bath district famous for its brick domes and centuries-old bathhouses. A relaxing spa session here is a classic Tbilisi experience.
You can also explore the Dry Bridge Market if you haven’t yet. This lively flea market is the best place in the city to find Soviet collectibles, vintage cameras, jewelry, and handmade souvenirs.
If you prefer culture, visit the Georgian National Gallery or relax at one of the many charming cafés scattered throughout the Old Town.
Evening Transfer to Armenia
Around 7 PM, I recommend booking an organized minivan transfer to Yerevan. These shared transfers are comfortable, affordable, and commonly used by travelers moving between Georgia and Armenia.
The journey takes roughly 5–6 hours, including the border crossing, and you’ll arrive in Yerevan, ready to begin the second half of your Caucasus adventure.

DISCOVERING ARMENIA
Day 6 – First Impressions of Yerevan
Wake up in Yerevan, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities and the vibrant capital of Armenia. Known for its distinctive pink volcanic tuff stone buildings, Yerevan feels warm, welcoming, and easy to explore on foot.
Start your day at the heart of the city, Republic Square, where elegant government buildings surround a large open plaza. If you’re here in the evening later on, the singing fountains create a beautiful light and music show.
From there, walk toward the impressive Yerevan Cascade, a giant stairway decorated with sculptures and modern art installations. Climb to the top for one of the best views in the city — on clear days you’ll even see the legendary Mount Ararat rising in the distance.
Continue your exploration around the lively Yerevan Opera Theatre, where locals gather in nearby cafés and parks. This area is perfect for lunch or a relaxed afternoon coffee.
If you enjoy markets and local life, visit Vernissage Market, the city’s famous open-air market where artisans sell traditional crafts, carpets, jewelry, and paintings.
For a deeper understanding of Armenian history, consider visiting the Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex, a powerful and important historical site overlooking the city.
Spend the evening exploring Yerevan’s lively restaurant scene and trying local dishes like khorovats (Armenian barbecue) or dolma.
Day 7 – Garni Temple, Geghard Monastery & Garni Canyon (Organised Day Trip)
Today join an organized tour to explore some of the most iconic landmarks near Yerevan, combining ancient temples, dramatic landscapes, and local culinary traditions.
Your first stop is Charents Arch, a beautiful stone arch dedicated to the Armenian poet Yeghishe Charents. From here you’ll enjoy one of the most famous panoramic views of Mount Ararat.
Next, continue to the remarkable Garni Temple in the Kotayk province. Built in the 1st century AD, it is the only surviving pagan temple in Armenia, dedicated to the sun god Mihr. Its classical Greek-style columns make it one of the country’s most recognizable historical landmarks.
The journey then continues to the spectacular Geghard Monastery, a UNESCO-listed complex partially carved into the surrounding rock cliffs. According to legend, the Holy Lance that pierced Christ was once kept here.
Another highlight of the tour is the Garni Gorge, where you’ll see the famous natural rock formation known as the “Symphony of Stones”. These incredible basalt columns resemble a giant organ carved into the canyon walls.

Day 9 – Final Yerevan City Walk & Departure
Spend your final morning enjoying Yerevan at a relaxed pace before departure.
Take one last walk through Republic Square and the surrounding boulevards, or explore the charming cafés along Abovyan Street, one of the city’s oldest and most elegant streets.
