WHY HAVE A NEMEA WINE TOUR?
The Wine Region
The gently rolling landscape of Nemea, situated in the northwest Peloponnese, isn’t just visually stunning—it’s also home to one of Greece’s most esteemed grape varieties and its largest Protected Designation of Origin zone. With rugged mountains dominating the scenery and vineyards sprawled across hillsides amidst ancient cypress trees and olive groves, Nemea boasts some of the most striking scenery in the Peloponnese.

From crisp whites to sparkling varieties and bold reds, Nemea offers a diverse array of wines to suit every palate. Renowned for their deep red hues, luscious fruit profiles, and well-defined tannins, Nemea wines owe their distinctive character to the region’s warm climate, limestone-rich soils, and the influence of surrounding mountains.
Among the vineyards that cascade down the hillsides, a variety of Europe’s finest grape varieties flourish. However, it’s the aromatic Agiorgitiko grape that has earned Nemea international acclaim and captivated wine enthusiasts. Originating from Nemea and named after a local chapel, Agiorgitiko is a highly fragrant red grape that lends itself to a range of wines, from robust reds bursting with red fruit nuances to delicate rosés.
Aside from Agiorgitiko, other notable Greek grape varieties thrive in the area, including Moschofilero, Roditis, and Malagousia.
A typical wine tasting tour in Nemea usually involves a visit to a vineyard, where the winemaker explains the wine-making process, followed by a stroll through the cellar and vineyards. Then comes the highlight: wine tasting, usually featuring 4 to 6 wines, sometimes accompanied by a selection of cheese, cured meats, and local specialties.
The Culture
While you’re exploring the vineyards, be sure to set aside some time in your itinerary to discover the rich history and culture of Nemea. One must-visit site is the Ancient Nemea archaeological site and the Nemea Archaeology Museum.
Ancient Nemea was once the esteemed venue for the biennial Nemean Games, dedicated to Zeus. Today, visitors can marvel at the remnants of the grand 4th-century-BC Doric Temple of Zeus, including three original columns. The on-site museum showcases a wealth of artifacts unearthed from the area, while the atmospheric stadium, once connected to the sanctuary by a sacred road, offers a glimpse into the ancient sporting traditions. Admission to these historical treasures is available for a small fee, allowing visitors to soak in the temple’s majestic setting amidst picturesque surroundings.
Additionally, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the Castle of Saint George (Burg Polyfengos) and the Panagia tou Vrahou Church, often referred to as the “Meteora of the Peloponnese.” The Panagia tou Vrahou Church, nestled within the very rock it’s named after, is a remarkable sight of archaeological and religious significance. There, amidst the ruins of an ancient church built into the cave, you’ll encounter remarkably preserved art pieces dating back to the 11th or 12th century. Admission is free, but it’s advisable to seek directions from locals rather than relying solely on GPS.
Our cultural suggestions are blended with nearby wineries, making it easy for you to enjoy both the history and wine of Nemea.
