Its capital, Ljubljana, offers charming old town streets and a relaxed vibe. Despite being close to tourist hotspots like Italy and Croatia, Slovenia remains refreshingly uncrowded. Slovenia’s unique location brings together elements of Slavic, Central European, and Mediterranean culture – reflected in its architecture, food, and wine.

Perfect for outdoor lovers, it offers activities like hiking, skiing, cave exploration. Easy to explore and full of natural beauty, Slovenia is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets.

Best Time to Visit Slovenia

Slovenia wears each season well, it all depends on what you want to experience and explore.

Spring (April–June) and Autumn (September–October) are ideal for most travellers. These shoulder seasons offer mild weather, blooming wildflowers or vibrant colours, fewer crowds, and lower prices. The quieter roads are making it ideal for a road trip during these seasons.

Summer (July–August) is the peak tourist season. The weather is generally warm and reliable, however popular spots like Lake Bled can be overwhelmed, accommodations fill up fast, and the heat can make outdoor activities less enjoyable. If you prefer fewer crowds and cooler weather, consider visiting outside the peak summer months.

Winter is best suited for those interested in skiing or festive charm. The Alps offer snow sports, and Ljubljana shines with Christmas markets, but temperatures often drop below freezing, and some areas can feel quite empty.

Keep in mind, Slovenia’s climate varies by region – Alpine in the north, continental in the centre, and Mediterranean in the west – so pack accordingly!

How many days should you spend in Slovenia?

3 to 7 days is a good time to see the main sights without rushing.

How to Get to Slovenia

Located in the heart of Europe, Slovenia is well connected to its neighbours. For travellers coming from mainland Europe, taking the bus or train is a convenient and eco-friendly choice.

Slovenia’s rail network links it to neighbouring countries and beyond, providing easy access to several key destinations across the region.

For longer distances, Ljubljana Airport offers flights from many European cities. The airport is about 30 minutes from Ljubljana’s city centre and is easily reachable by public bus, by taxi or by a private transfer vehicle.

How to Get Around Slovenia

By car: The best way to explore Slovenia. Its small size makes it ideal for road trips, offering the freedom to reach both top sights and remote gems. To use Slovenia’s motorways, you’ll need a valid vignette — a toll sticker or digital pass registered to your vehicle’s license plate.

By bus: A reliable and affordable option. Buses connect most towns and tourist spots, with more frequent service in summer. Great for day trips from Ljubljana to places like Bled, Lake Bohinj, or the Škocjan Caves.

By train: Slovenia has a reliable rail network connecting major cities like Ljubljana, Maribor, and Koper, with regular train services throughout the day.

By bike or foot: In cities and smaller towns, cycling and walking are easy and enjoyable ways to get around.

Is Slovenia Cheap to Visit?

Slovenia uses the Euro (€), which makes things simple if you are traveling through other Eurozone countries — no need to exchange money. While not wildly expensive, Slovenia is not as cheap as you might expect, often pricier than in nearby countries like Hungary or Croatia.

Accommodation Options in Slovenia

Slovenia offers a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury five-star hotels to budget-friendly hostels and campgrounds. Our top recommendation? The self-catering apartments found throughout the country — perfect for budget-conscious travelers, as they allow you to cook your own meals and save on dining out.

You will also find plenty of hotels and Airbnbs available, so you can choose whatever best suits your preferences and needs. While popular destinations like Ljubljana and Bled can be a bit more expensive, they are still affordable compared to major tourist hubs elsewhere in Europe.

We book our accommodation through Expedia.com, where we find great deals on places that offer good value and are conveniently located near the attractions we want to visit. Find below our favorites in Ljubljana and Bled!

Slovenia is for the explorers

To explore Slovenia properly, it is best to plan your itinerary in advance or book organized experiences based on your interests.

This small but incredibly rich country offers everything from alpine hikes and fairytale lakes to underground caves and coastal towns. With so much to see and do, it would take weeks to experience it all.

For nature lovers, Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, and the Soča Valley are must-visits, offering hiking, kayaking, and stunning views.

Adventure seekers can head to Bovec for white water rafting or paraglide over the Julian Alps.

If you love history add Predjama Castle and the Škocjan Caves to your list.

Want a slower pace? Wander the medieval streets of Piran or sip wine in the Vipava Valley. Slovenia truly has something for every kind of explorer.

Ljubljana: A Capital Full of Charm

Ljubljana, often called the Dragon City for its iconic copper dragon statues, enchants visitors with its blend of old-world charm and modern flair. The medieval Old Town is a standout, arguably one of the most beautiful in Europe. Though the city is compact its heart is vibrant, scenic, and full of character.

Named Europe’s Green Capital in 2016, Ljubljana boasts excellent walkability and a commitment to sustainability, making it easy to explore by foot or bike.

A great travel tip: the Ljubljana Card (available for 24, 48, or 72 hours) grants access to major attractions and unlimited public transport—a smart choice for short visits.

Should I Visit Ljubljana for One or Two Days?

In just one or two days, travellers can experience many of Ljubljana’s highlights. The Old Town is the city’s soul, home to the richly decorated Ljubljana Cathedral, the bustling Central Market along the river, and the Art Nouveau Dragon Bridge, steeped in local legend.

The 11th-century Ljubljana Castle, accessible by a scenic cable car ride, offers sweeping city views and cultural exhibits. Do not miss charming squares like Prešeren Square or a relaxing stroll through Tivoli Park. While one day covers the essentials, a second day allows time to dive deeper—sampling Slovenian cuisine, discovering local art, and enjoying the city’s leisurely rhythm.

Discover Slovenian Flavors

Slovenia’s culinary scene blends Italian, German, and Balkan flavors with fresh local ingredients, offering delicious farm-to-table dining throughout the country. Must-try dishes include savory cheese štruklji dumplings, crispy-on-the-outside frico (potato and cheese pie), and rich mushroom soup made from locally foraged fungi. If you crave something spicy, try bograč—a hearty meat stew from the Prekmurje region, similar to the Hungarian goulash.

Do not miss tasting pumpkin seed oil, perfect drizzled on salads or even desserts. For dessert, indulge in Prekmurska gibanica, a mouthwatering layered cake with poppy seeds, walnuts, apples, and cottage cheese.

Beer lovers can enjoy the quirky beer fountain in Žalec. And stay tuned for our upcoming article on wine tours in Slovenia!

To truly experience the country’s flavors, a guided food tour is the perfect way to explore—one bite (and sip) at a time.
