KASTRO & THE CHAPEL OF EPTA MARTYRES

Kastro, the former capital of Sifnos, stands out as one of the island’s most picturesque and significant villages, located approximately 3 km from the current capital, Apollonia. Its name derives from the fortress-like “castle” formed by its buildings, retaining its medieval fortified structure to this day. Today, Kastro offers accommodations, tavernas, bakeries, cafés, bars, and the Sifnos Archaeological Museum, showcasing exhibits from the prehistoric to the Roman Era.

Perched on the eastern side of Kastro, overlooking the sea, is the charming chapel of the Seven Martyrs, situated atop a rocky prominence and exposed to the elements. This landmark of the village boasts the characteristic Cycladic architecture with its white-washed walls and blue dome, accessible only via a winding downhill path from the village. Visitors often experience the fierce winds and splashes from the waves below as they make their way to the church.

During sunset, visitors can savor refreshments while admiring the view of the village’s white walls, stone paths, and the meeting of the sea and sky from the back side of Kastro. Alternatively, they can enjoy the sunset while walking along the trail to the chapel. Here, the contrast of the raw power of the sea and the ruggedness of the rocks creates a captivating interplay of strength and fierceness. As visitors reach the end of the trail, surrounded by towering rock walls and the vast sea, they are surrounded by a sense of smallness, heightened by the deep orange hues of the sunset blending with the crashing waves, creating unforgettable memories.

You can’t miss this spot—neither from your sunset in Sifnos list nor from your Sifnos travel itinerary in general!

AGIOS SΥΜΕΟΝ

Perched atop the mountain overlooking the port of Kamares, Agios Symeon, constructed in 1667, provides breathtaking views and hosts one of the most beautiful sunsets you can imagine (as seen in our cover photo!).

Sifnos, characterized by four parallel mountain ranges, features Agios Simeon (463 m.) as one of its most prominent peaks. Particularly enchanting at night, the illuminated church stands out against the backdrop of dark mountains, visible from the port below.

Accessible by car or bike, a mere 7 km drive leads to the temple, where a parking lot awaits at the back side. While the road is generally safe, drivers should exercise caution on narrower sections accommodating only two cars at a time. Adjacent to the parking area, a stone map of Sifnos and the Cyclades aids in identifying the surrounding islands.

From Agios Symeon, you’ll see a breathtaking view that stretches from Kamares to the island’s main areas and beyond to other islands. At sunset, watch the sun sink into the sea, and if the sky is clear, catch a glimpse of the Peloponnese.

This spot is at least 500 meters high, giving you a special view. If you’re there in August, you can join the festival of St. Simeon on the 31st, adding to the charm of this perfect sunset spot.
